Leader Dogs for the Blind is an organization that has been training guide dogs for over 75 years. Leader Dogs provide independence for thousands of people around the world. We are very excited to announce that Future Leader Dog Dasher will be joining the Hill community for the next year!
As a puppy raiser, Ms. Apol is asked to help prepare FLD Dasher for his job as guide dog by providing exposure to many different kinds of people, vehicles, environments and animals. His daily care and training will provide the foundation needed to begin guide dog training at the Leader Dog School in Rochester. The students will also play a big role in his training over the next year as they help him navigate life in an elementary school.
We are aware that not all students have been around dogs and therefore, might not be comfortable. It is our hope, that as they learn about how a future leader dog is chosen and trained, they will become more comfortable with dogs, especially service dogs. Please know that FLD Dasher will be on a leash at all times and because he is in training, the students will not be playing with him. FLD Dasher will also have a kennel in the media center office where he can go when he needs a break.
If your child has a severe dog allergy , please email Ms. Apol ([email protected]) so she can make arrangements to keep FLD Dasher in his kennel when your child is in the media center. Please include your child’s name and classroom teacher in the email.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns as we hope to make this a positive experience for all involved.
